The last two Summer seasons I did a blog post about the best fish & chips places in Nova Scotia ( at least the local ones that we went to).This summer I thought I would switch it up to include all kinds of local food…East Coast food!
From fish cakes to food trucks to fish & chips to maybe even baked bean and salad suppers haha, we’ll see about that one. So starting now until the end of Summer when we are out and about and have chance to stop at interesting places, I’ll be sure to order something fun, East Coast style, and at the end of August, I’ll show you some of my favourites!

Just what I needed! A mid week adventure with a friend! Yesterday, we went to Chester  and browsed some shops, had lunch at a great little cafe, and then a sweet treat in Mahone Bay on the way home. Lots of stories and laughs…so much fun ALWAYS!

It’s June! The first month of the summer season!
The weather is getting warmer (hopefully) and the sun is shining almost every day ( it sure is today) ⌠itâs time to celebrate June!
The month of June includes a couple of interesting customs. The first is the custom of marriage. Ever heard the term “June bride”? It refers to the fact more people get married in June than any other month. Contrary to popular belief, this tradition did NOT come about because of the dependable weather. Actually, there are a number of interesting reasons J-U-N-E spells “marriage.”
Some classical scholars believe the month of June is actually named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Fast-forward a few centuries and you’ll find another good reason to marry in June: according to one old wives’ tale, “Marry in the month of May, and you’ll surely rue the day. Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you’ll go.” haha it’s funny to look at these old stories.
We actually have a wedding this first weekend in June to attend, our sweet niece is getting married and we’re looking forward to celebrating their special day.
HOWEVER,  JUNE in the Maritimes  means “June Bug Month”
I have friends that DETEST these critters! They don’t bother me…I have actually eaten things similar to this in China at the night market. They aren’t too bad…seriously!

Here’s to the beginning of the summer months!
My flowering crab apple tree is at it’s peak and so here are a few pictures because by this time next week it will be done and the trees will be green.
I  LOVE LOVE weekends that are warm and we can enjoy eating outside â¤
That was quite a thunder and lightning storm we had in the wee hours this morning. It was one of those crash, bang, light up the whole sky storms, and it woke me up with a start. We don’t tend to have those kinda storms in these parts of the country so it was cool and… I guess I must have fell back to sleep.
This weekend is Apple Blossom Weekend in Nova Scotia, especially in the Annapolis Valley. Lots of events and activities and the Annual Apple Blossom Parade. While I really wanted to go, I also wanted to stay home and just do a couple things in my back yard. It’s getting just the way I want it so it’s fun to spend time there. I did manage to get to an Apple Orchard though, one more local, and walk down the path and smell that wonderful smell of the blossoms. There’s nothing like it!! I also picked up some rhubarb and apples so I could make a tasty treat to enjoy when we are relaxing tonight.
It was a fun day!
What in the world is Chaga? lol
James brought some Chaga home for me to try. His friend (boss) has been collecting it when he’s out on his hikes and introduced James to this interesting…mushroom? I had to google it.
“Rather than soft like a mushroom, chaga is hard, almost as hard as wood. It is unique, nothing like common mushrooms.” In fact,  the Siberians call it the âGift from Godâ and the âMushroom of Immortality,â this vibrant growth has been used by humans to support health for thousands of years. The Japanese call it âThe Diamond of the Forest,â while the Chinese deem it âKing of Plants.â For the Chinese that is saying a lot, since they have an immense history with countless plants.”
Now, you can get the great powerful secret of the Orient in your very own backyard…kinda…if you know what to look for.
Inonotus obliquus, commonly known as chaga mushroom , is actually a fungus, parasitic on birch trees and other trees.  The sterile conk is irregularly formed and has the appearance of burnt charcoal. Weird… The name Chaga comes from the Russian word for mushroom.
Chaga is traditionally grated into a fine powder and used to brew a beverage resembling coffee or tea. Â But you can also leave it in chunks and brew a “chunk” in a pot of water and keep reusing it until all the goodness is out of it. James brought some ground chaga home and then yesterday his friend gave him a bag of chaga chunks. Of course, I HAD to try it!!
It has a mild flavour and really isn’t too bad. It’s mellow.
Guess I better go for a walk and find some Chaga!

It’s Friday!!! Yay!!! It’s the May long weekend and it’s also a pretty important day in our family!
Someone who has been wanting straight teeth and a beautiful smile for a long time FINALLY, yes FINALLY decided to just do it!

James, speaking from experience told his Dad steak is one of the hardest things to eat with braces, and just when we are heading in to BBQ season. Good thing we enjoyed your favourite delicious steak one last time til braces come off!
