Goodbye Jia Jia

It’s time to say goodbye to the world’s oldest panda, Jia Jia.

I love panda’s. They are considered a symbol of China. That’s probably why I like them so much. Naturally, when I was living in China, that was one of the things on my bucket list…to see real live Asian Panda Bears.

I had the privilege of meeting Jia Jia 5 years ago, as well as An An, Ying Ying and Le Le.  Jia Jia lived at the Ocean Park theme park in Hong Kong. She was my first  first experience with Panda Bears. I’ve loved watching them ever since. Here is a blog post from 2011.

Here is what CBC news reported…

The world’s oldest-ever panda in captivity was euthanized Sunday at the Hong Kong theme park where she lived because her health had deteriorated.

Ocean Park said in a statement that a veterinarian euthanized 38-year-old Jia Jia to prevent further suffering and for ethical reasons.

Guinness World Records recognized Jia Jia as the oldest giant panda to live in captivity. The average lifespan for a panda in the wild is 18 to 20 years, while in captivity it’s 30 years, according to Guinness.

Born in the wild, Jia Jia was taken to live at a wildlife reserve’s breeding center in central China’s Sichuan province in 1980, when she was around two years old.

She and another panda, An An, were given to Hong Kong as a gift from Beijing in 1999, on the second anniversary of the city’s handover from Britain to China.

Pandas, a beloved symbol of China, were long considered one of the world’s most endangered animals, although last month a leading international group lowered its classification to “vulnerable.”

Jia Jia, who celebrated her birthday in August, had shown signs of poor health in her old age, including high blood pressure and arthritis, which required regular medication. Over the past two weeks, her condition had worsened significantly, with her weight falling as she stopped eating.

“This is a day we knew would eventually come, but it is nevertheless a sad day for everyone at the park, especially for the park’s keepers who took care of her over the years,” Ocean Park’s chairman, Leo Kung, said in the statement.

Three other pandas still live at Ocean Park — 30-year-old An An, and Ying Ying and Le Le, both 11.

It is so sad. But I am happy I had the chance to see this special Panda in Hong Kong. RIP Jia Jia.

Vacation is over…back to work!

The last day of David’s Fall vacation. What to do? Another gorgeous day and the leaves are still so beautiful. James was actually up early to capture this beauty at the old train bridge in Bridgewater.

We decided another drive…a Sunday drive …a different route…a different part of the coast. We are so blessed to live in a province that has coast on all sides.

We skipped church today and left early so it wouldn’t be a late day, took Abby for a short drive to Nana’s ( she LOVES the car) and headed to the valley.

img_9369 img_9151 img_9367 img_9366 img_9365 img_9370 We took Hwy 8 passing Kejimkujik National Park on the way. We wanted to see the site of the really bad forest fires this summer. Such devastation.

img_9175 img_9176 img_9178 img_9180 img_9181 img_9182

Saw this beauty after all the brown and char from the fire.img_9184

This drive put us in the quaint town of Annapolis Royal. We walked around Fort Anne and downtown, then crossed the causeway to have lunch at Vicki’s.

img_9188 img_9364 img_9195 img_9363 img_9198 img_9200 img_9205 img_9362 img_9210 img_9211 img_9215 img_9249 img_9361 img_9236 img_9238 img_9240 img_9248 img_9247

After lunch it was out to the coast to Port Royal, Habitation , Victoria Beach and Digby Gut. We thought we could get all the way around the coast on this area but there were no roads so we had to back track and cross over to Parker’s cove. This is a lovely area over looking the Bay of Fundy. I would love to have a cottage here. We followed this route along to Hampton, Port Lorne and Port George before cutting across to Middleton and then catching Hwy 10 home to Bridgewater.

img_9254 img_9261 img_9354 img_9360 img_9359 img_9276 img_9282 img_9288 img_9358 img_9298 img_9357 img_9356 img_9319 img_9355 img_9325 img_9350 img_9342

We had a gorgeous day to do a little more sight seeing. It was a wonderful vacation exploring more of our own province. A place where tourists from all over the world visit especially in the Fall.

And it’s back to work for David.

We were actually heading off to bed at 9pm when he got a call from work with a major situation and he had to go in. Technically he’s still on vacation but it’s back to work!

Today I am getting back to my routine and cooking up a special Birthday dinner  for our sweet daughter who is 27 today!!! Whoa! How can that be?

david-laura-jamesimg_9439 img_9457 Have a great week friends!

Three Churches

Mahone Bay is a small town located on the northwest shore of the south shore of Nova Scotia. It is famous for it’s 3 iconic, frequently photographed, picturesque, “seen on postcards” and ornaments churches. I have photographed them many times and in many seasons.

The town also has a number of upscale shops and restaurants, festivals and events which almost universally are designed to appeal to the tourist trade. Mahone Bay is a great little town to visit, shop, and have lunch.

We are in Mahone Bay often as David’s parents live just outside of town. We also get our Abby girl’s special peanut butter treats at the Dog Shop there.

Today we were driving through to do a couple errands and we couldn’t help but snap a few pictures. It’s the tail end of vacay and we need to take advantage of such beautiful days!

Such an interesting skyline in the harbour…

Then a quick drive along Shingle Mill Rd. The colours here prompted a quick photoshoot.

How High Do Your Tides Rise?

Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy has bragging rights to the Highest Tides in the World!

World’s Highest Recorded Tides

Twice each day the Bay of Fundy fills and empties its 160 billion tons of water creating the highest tides in the world. In 1975 The Guinness Book of World Records listed Burntcoat Head in the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia as the site of the greatest average tide of 47.5 feet with an extreme range of 53.6 feet.

Today we went to Burntcoat Head. This spectacular place has been on my 2016 list of places to visit since our son James was there and photographed this place.

Below are two of James’ photos…

It was a beautiful day for a drive…

This afternoon we went for a beautiful drive along the coast…a different road, a new route in a place we haven’t been before. There’s something about old weathered boat and lobster sheds that grab my attention.

How many of these kind of pictures do I need? Sorry, I love them.

We ended our day at the waterfront. Five cruise ships in port today and lots of people around. I love walking the boardwalk.

The CHURCH at Grand-Pré

Today is Sunday. Canadian Thanksgiving Sunday and I wish I was off to church with James and David but I’m not able to this morning. There is just so much to be Thankful about living in our beautiful country. Days like yesterday when you see the beautiful “Colour of Fall” on display against a gorgeous blue backdrop is one of many reasons.

One of our stops yesterday was Grand-Pré in the Annapolis Valley. Grand-Pré is a rural community in Nova Scotia. Its French name translates to “Great Meadow” and the community lies at the eastern edge of the valley on a peninsula jutting into the Minas Basin surrounded by extensive dyked farm fields, framed by the Gaspereau River and Cornwallis River.  Grand-Pré was made famous by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem Evangeline. On June 30, 2012, the Landscape of Grand-Pré was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The church and statue at Grand-Pré are beautiful to photograph.

Happy Thanksgiving Sunday!

For the past two weeks…

For the past two weeks we watched along with the rest of the world, the BEST of the BEST, the world’s greatest athletes compete in Rio. Nova Scotia had some wonderful athletes on the Canadian team. With great pride we congratulate them on their achievements.

Tonight, one last event that brings the world just a little bit closer together, It is the closing of the 2016 Olympics in Rio. And in Rio Carnaval style…a HUGE party and celebration! It was spectacular.

IMG_6800 IMG_6806 IMG_6807 IMG_6809The rest are NOT my pictures but some of my favourites from the night. And to be honest, watching the Olympics made me realize how fortunate I was to have lived in this place for 14 months and to visit the many famous landmarks numerous times. It actually made me miss Brazil and Rio ( which I said never would) lol

Watching the Opening Ceremony at the Maracana and all the Brazil commercials for Rio 2016, all the familiar places where we went makes me REALLY miss Brazil, and even sort of makes me wish we were still living there…sort of.

I’m really looking forward to watching the various events over the next few weeks. Let the games begin!
