The last birthday…

Yep…it’s my birthday! The last one…

…the last one BEFORE the BIG 50 that is! 2017 is gonna be a HUGE year!

So I will celebrate this Birthday in a similar manner ( Birthday meal at my parents) as all the rest and remember the wonderful years of my forties…

This yearΒ we decided to have my Birthday dinner in the evening. It is usually at noon time BUT it’s kinda nice just to relax and veg with nothing planned ( and the kids all like to sleep in til noon on days off…hey they are shift workers so it’s understandable) And …James is taking off to Quebec today to spend a week’s vacay with friends and he made me a delicious brunch before he went…

Eggs Benedict topped with Maple Smoked Salmon

BUT…I guess I’ve got a whole year to figure out what FIFTY is gonna look like for me. And there has to be a change!

Adventure For Two

I am from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada and I'm back from traveling with my husband on an expat assignment to foreign lands. 2011-2012 we were in Shenyang, China. Spring 2012- Spring 2013 we were in Resende,RJ Brazil then back to Shenyang, China in July 2013 until the end of July 2014. Expat life WAS amazing! Adventure abounds no matter where we travel to. We really enjoyed the amazing opportunity to live and experience culture and tradition in these places. BUT now we are finished and adjusting to life in our small town in Canada. Our days of travel and adventure are not over.

    1. Haha, Oh MacKenzie you are so great for my ego!!! haha…you made me smile when I read this. Yes…I am that OLD!!!!! I have 3 ADULT kids ( even though a lot of days I only feel like I’m in my twenties) !I have been through a whole lifetime it seems and fortunately we had the sense to have our family when we were young. Actually after I realized nursing wasn’t for me ALL I ever wanted was to get married and have babies. Unfortunately my pregnancies weren’t super easy and I am so blessed to have 3 children. We LOVE being “young” to enjoy them as adults. Secrets? I have none. BUT I truly thing diet, exercise, healthy mind, stress free relationships, and just good simple living and thankfulness plays a huge roll. By the way…I think you are definitely on the right track and you have great genes. Your Mama looks lovely so…no worries I think! Thanks for the Birthday wishes!! 2017…changes coming I think! Hope you’re enjoying these last days of 2016.

      1. Haha- I’m not just saying it! It’s so true!!!!! I seriously need to take notes off this comment, these are awesome tips! You are too sweet about what you said about my mom.. I’ll definitely pass that on to her, it’ll make her day πŸ™‚ How old were you when you started having kids? I have always planned on having them later, but at the same time it is SO cool to see how you still have the freedom and physical means to travel and embrace life the way you do even after raising a family. I have never really considered that side of the token. Thanks for sharing this with me. I hope your week has been so great so far πŸ™‚

      2. Aww Mackenzie! Well…in a nutshell…My husband and I met when I was 16. I graduated at 17 and started nursing school, and after a few months realized it was not for me…( too young, too much compassion, shouldn’t sleep at night from all I saw in hospital) so I worked. David I were engaged and married when I was 18. All I ever wanted was to marry and have a family. We knew when we started our family I would be at home. We had our first baby boy when I was 20 the November before I turned 21 in December. 11 months later we had our baby girl, 3 years later we had a second son. With three children our family was busy and complete. Goode Party of 5 :). I was a stay at home Mom,and my husband & I were very busy in our church with a young family. Youth leaders, he was treasurer, I volunteered in the public school when the kids were young and later was employed as a TA. Later when they were in Junior High we decided to HomeSchool…I Homeschooled all three kids through Grade 7-12. Those were fun years!!! It also seems like a life time ago seeing as we “left the nest” and went on our expat adventure living in China & Brazil. We just celebrated our 30th Anniversary on July 18, 2016 and as you know I will celebrate my 50th Birthday in 2017. So…our life has been full!! If I had to do over I wouldn’t change too much. I especially wouldn’t change having my family when I am young. Because now I look at my adult kids and I still feel young ( most days) and I REALLY enjoy them and think I can still relate to their life and challenges they face now instead of being too old to relate. That’s been our life, it has NOT been perfect, I left out the MAJOR hurdles we had to deal with, like any family and relationship has to…but by God’s grace and mercy we continue…and I feel blessed beyond measure! Your story will be beautiful too MacKenzie, however you and DJ decide to do life!! xo

      3. Anna, your story is SOO beautiful! Thank you for sharing with me. I appreciate you taking the time…I feel like I know you and your husband even better through it. And although you decided nursing wasn’t for you, it’s incredible how you have spent your time in service to your children, the church and being an amazing wife! I just absolutely love the perspective you have because I feel like it’s an unique situation to have kids that young, but it is SO awesome to see all that you and your husband can do now! Even the fact that you just celebrated your 30th anniversary, and can look forward to so many more is just really cool. Thank you for your encouragement for DJ and I too. Have a great New Years Eve tomorrow bringing in a beautiful new year πŸ™‚
