Cuba Vacation PART ~2

Relaxing at the resort was so lovely, BUT what else did we do?

We did a Jeep Excursion! Running around the mainland seeing some back country places.

DSC09555 DSC09559DSC09563 DSC09565 It was a full day…horseback riding, watching a cock fight ( not to the death, just a demonstration) beautiful gardens, cane tasting, cow milking, authentic Cuban lunch ( roast pig, rice & beans) swimming in a local water hole and chance to interact a bit with the locals. I even bought a piece of art from a Juan Carlos 😀

It was a full day and I ate plenty of dust but such a great way to see a bit of life in Cuba off the “resort island”

Cuba Vacation PART ~1

David & I love to travel. We love to travel South in the Winter to escape the cold. Believe it or not this is our very first time to stay at a resort for an entire week!

Our choice Winter getaway is cruising! This year, however,we are in Cuba. We are here for the wedding and it’s also a great way to see if we like all inclusive resort vacations. We flew into Santa Clara Airport and then took a bus to the resort. ( Our very own Wedding Group bus)

img_5045Just off Cuba’s north coast is the inviting resort destination of Cayo Santa Maria. With its white sand beaches, azure waters, and range of resorts, a vacation here is full of sunshine and relaxation. The area is known for its beaches, and has become famous for tourists that flock to its shores to step away from reality and enjoy the Cuban hospitality, heat, and landscape.

Cayo Santa Maria is an island on the north of Cuba in the Jardines del Rey archipelago, connected to mainland Cuba by a 48-kilometer causeway. With more than 10-kilometers of pristine, white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear blue waters.  Flights from Canada to Cayo Santa Maria arrive at the Santa Clara airport and then take a bus transfer approximately 1.5 hours from Cayo Santa Maria to the resort district on the island and across the causeway from mainland Cuba. Due to Cayo Santa Maria’s location, on an island just off of the mainland north coast of Cuba, the area is known for its resort community, but little else beyond the beach and poolside activities.

So…What to do a whole week in one place?

Well seeing as we were there for the wedding, a bit of time was spent making sure everything was ready for Saturday and then it was beach time, eating, pool time, eating, eating, entertainment, coffee and check mail, eating, and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of walking. Melia las Dunas resort is large and so we spent a lot of time all week walking just getting to places.

Tomorrow see what else we did!

Sneak Peek

We’re Home!! The week went so quickly!! It was fabulous and the wedding was amazing. So beautiful and like something out of a fairy tale.

We’ve been a little busy getting back to routine, and unpacked and laundry and David back to work right away….I haven’t had chance to blog about the trip, and adventures or the wedding. I promise to get at it in the next few days and…we still have the Wedding Reception here next weekend.

In the meantime, here is a sneak peek…

IMG_6115They are such a beautiful couple! Stay tuned…I promise to post some more soon!

Headin’ to Cuba!

Up bright and early! Too early really, ( actually I didn’t even sleep a lot) and off to the airport. We are heading to Cuba this morning. eeekk….so excited…it’s Wedding Week!!!

That’s right, we are on our way to Cuba with a group of 37 family and friends to see our oldest son marry his girl!

And… get a little sun and relax time too!!! The week ahead looks fantastic.

What makes my heart very thankful is both James & Laura will be there with us. Laura didn’t think it would work for her to go and last minute the arrangements were made.

I won’t be posting anything while I am away ( internet and time to do it are issues) but stay tuned for some Wedding pics and highlights when I get back.

Cuba ready…

Packed and ready

We are still a couple days away from leaving BUT I need to be organized and I NEED options so the #1 thing on my list for this weekend was to pack suitcases. It is relatively simple and easy to do ahead of time when you are going from a cold climate to a warm tropical climate. Easy I say, except for the fact I never know what I actually want to take, I need options, I always take too much unless I just pack in a carryon, and I usually stress over this detail of travelling…ugh!

BUT, it’s done!! We’re packed and under limit. phew!

And poor Abby has been clingy and mopey all week. It only gets worse the closer the day comes. But I know she’ll have a nice time with Nana & Papa.

3 days…

Only about a quarter!!

Oh there’s so much more fun and adventure and places to explore!!!

I saw a fun little thing to do on Facebook today called My Travel Map. I don’t often do these tests but this one I did. I filled it out.

the results…

24.55% of the World…so much grey left to explore

Looking at it like this makes me realize that I have been so blessed to travel and see and live in these places, and also that there is so much more of this amazing world that I want to see!

My boy is back in town

Well James is back after having an adventure filled Spring Break. James loves to travel as much as I do and even though we’ll all go to Cuba for the Wedding in April, he wanted to go somewhere for his break in March. So he flew to Toronto but then where?

IMG_0238

Where to go? And without spending a lot of money.

So he is full of resources and talked to his cousin who’s husband works for Air Canada. They can fly ‘Stand by” anywhere Air Canada flies for a relatively low price. He asked if they were up to some travel for March Break and they were. So…the destination they chose. The land down under…

James and his cousin Rachel have been wanting to see Australia together for years! So James, Rachel and her husband Gerald and baby Kiet spent 4 days in Sydney, Australia. They had a great time and lots of adventures and fun getting “stand by” flights. Gerald actually had to stay an extra day in Sydney while James, Rachel and the baby flew home. James finally made it home to Bridgewater yesterday a few days later than expected. And of course with a big smile on his face.( travel does that to a person)

Here are a couple pics from his phone and one from his camera. There hasn’t been time to get all the gorgeous ones from his camera yet.

Don’t you just feel like you’re there?

And it’s soon time for the next adventure! Glad you’re home safely James!

Switchin’ it up!

These winter days I’m thinking about summer ( as many people do) and making plans! Especially with a day like yesterday. It may be a bit pre mature but yesterday was gorgeous Spring-like day here!

5 months from today, on July 18th, David & I will celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary! Crazy eh? People look at us and laugh when we tell them. “Did you get married when you were 10 they ask ?” Haha, it’s funny. Not quite, but we married young. Started a family a couple years later ( our oldest son will marry his sweetheart in 2 months) Anyway… it’s 30 years this year!!

I wanted to celebrate this milestone in France, Paris to be exact. We’ve celebrated our Anniversaries in some pretty sweet places the last 5 years…so we thought (or I thought) Paris would be fun for our 30th. ( We haven’t been to Europe except for a stop over in Spain on our way to China from Brazil) That was the PLAN! I’ve had this in my mind for awhile and would start planning our itinerary this Winter.

Well… many times I looked at it, and tossed it aside, and looked at it again, and I wasn’t getting real excited about the idea of the whole Paris and France thing…so what could be some other options? I LOVE traveling, I love adventure BUT this Winter I’m just not getting excited about going anywhere really… until one day out of the blue, I had an idea.

Periodically David & I talk about our “Bucket List”. His is obviously  a little different than mine. But he is usually game for whatever I propose…within reason.

So here is what we came up with… 29 years ago, the year after we married, we did a road trip out West for his twin’s wedding in Alberta. We went just to the edge of British Columbia ( just to say we went to BC). David has always wanted to do that trip again.

This summer we have a three week period in July around our Anniversary. ( 3 weeks is all David could get…peak time for vacations) and we are gonna do  an Across Canada Road Trip of sorts…ALL THE WAY TO Victoria, BC! James’ photos really made us want to visit!!

I say it’s a ROAD TRIP of sorts because once we decided what we’d do, I dug out the maps, sat down for hours with my computer and got right at planning and calculating. Three weeks is a long time BUT not long enough!!! Not long enough to do EVERYTHING we want to do this time, so… it’s gonna be a combination road trip and flights across the country. We won’t have to drive LONG hours on end and be exhausted, we won’t have to drive through some of the “less exciting” places we’ve already driven through, we can pick and choose a bit and spend MORE time in our favourite places, and we will have time and energy to just have FUN and ADVENTURE!!!! It’s not a lot of fun when you have to spend 10 hour days just driving and be frustrated that you can’t stop and see certain things because of time restraints.

I am so excited, and so is he, and we have been having lots of fun looking at maps, and places and options and ideas… I actually have flights, all our hotels, and car rentals booked for the segment that we aren’t driving our own car. Haha…It doesn’t take me long when I get excited about something!!! ( besides, it’s peak time and things book up quickly) It makes me think it’s the right choice for us this year.

There’s nothing wrong with switchin’ things up. LOTS and LOTS more planning to do! It’s gonna be an exciting 30th Anniversary Across Canada for this Canadian girl! 5 months away…haha 😀

So what am I doing these wintery days? Planing for summer of course ( and a wedding trip in April) Fun times! 😛
